Textbook Outcome Calculator

A “textbook outcome” means the patient was alive 30 days after surgery with no major complication, no unplanned return to the operating room, and no unplanned return to hospital for a related problem. This tool shows how often a textbook outcome was achieved after an operation, and estimates the chance for one patient.

The estimates come from past patients in a surgical registry (ACS NSQIP, 2012–2024). They describe chances; they cannot say what would happen if something about the patient changed. For research and discussion with a surgical team, not for decisions on its own.

1

The operation

Additional procedures planned during the same operation

Optional. If entered, a second, complexity-adjusted estimate is shown under the main result.

2

The patient

Enter 90 for 90 or older.

Sex
Daily activities before surgery
ASA class (overall health rating by anesthesia)
Diabetes
Infection or sepsis in the 2 days before surgery

Health conditions

Latest preoperative laboratory values (within 90 days)

Optional. Used only when all five values are entered. Enter the most recent values from the 90 days before surgery.

How often a textbook outcome was achieved

Choose an operation in step 1.

This patient’s estimate

Fill in step 2. Every question needs an answer; “not recorded” is a valid answer.
